Is it possible to test the gas tank float/trigger to see if it and the gauge are working?
I think putting grease in the the electrical connectors, including light sockets, is a relatively new practice. I don't recall it prior to the late 1970s or early 80s. It is a good idea though as it will keep out the moisture that causes corrosion.

Testing procedure for the gas gauge is in the service manual.
